Soca Music Heading To The Big Time
Brief - Soca Music To Get Its Own
Grammy
The 2006
Grammy Awards will definitely make history when Soca music
will be recognized for the first time with an award for
"Best Soca Recording".
Sonata
Smith is a member of the Grammy Awards Voting Committee who
started as an intern and lobbied hard with statistical
evidence to get soca music recognized at the Grammys.
She revealed that voting will start in 2005 to nominate
songs for the first Soca Grammy.
Smith
commented : " I had to do a lot of research, which
included going to the various islands collecting data and
music. They had to know that the music was creating
some sort of impact, at least within the Caribbean
community. "
She added :
" They did not know about the music and there was
really nothing about it out there to make them sit up and
take notice on their own. The song that I used as a
sample was " Trini To The Bone " by David Rudder
and Carl Jacobs, so you can see that Trinidad and Tobago was
given the recognition as the birth place of the genre
".
Dare
to forge the future . . . make the difference.
